Late in 1998, then-council-member Daniela
Cambie' created an AIAA San Francisco Section (AIAASF) student paper contest
for which the winner would receive a trip to the Politecnico de Milano, Italy,
to present his or her research. The contest was held during the
winter and spring of 1999 and was won by Robert Bristol, a graduate
student from UC Berkeley. Robert was hosted by student members of
the AIAA's Italian counterpart, the Associazione Italiana Di Aeronautica
ed Astronautica (AIDAA), in Milan. In Milan, the AIDAA has merged
with the European Association of Aerospace Students (Euroavia), a
Europe-wide organization for aerospace engineering students.
This was the beginning of what we hope will become a continuing sister
section relationship between the AIAA San Francisco Section and the
Milan chapter of AIDAA/Euroavia.
In November, 1999, several members of AIDAA/Euroavia came to visit with
members of the AIAASF to discuss possibilities for really establishing
the sister section relationship. At that time, the Stanford University
section of the AIAA (AIAASU) was brought onboard in the spirit of
maintaining the student-nature of this program.
Goals and Proposed Benefits of the Sister Section Program
The goals of this program are to foster the exchange of the following:
- Industry Contacts
- Publications and Organization Information
- Scholarships and Contests
- Student Participation
The proposed benefits for the AIAA:
- Opportunities for member participation in European engineering
exchange events.
- Establishment of a gateway to European universities and corporations
for internships, research, and future employment.
- Opportunities for cultural and social exchange
- Improved visibility for the San Francisco and Stanford AIAA sections in
Europe.
A committee is currently being established within the AIAASF and within
AIAASU to define the goals of the sister section program and to begin
making these goals happen. The committee currently consists of
the following members:
- Matt Jardin
- Steve Jaeger
- Larry Chien
- Annie Kaplan
- Ron Palermo
