Model Airplane Contest
Coordinated by retired member, George Xenakis, this continuing event
allows the young and young-at-heart to participate in an model airplane
building contest that tests accuracy, time aloft, distance, and aesthetic
design. Contests are held quarterly at Moffett’s Hangar One. For more information
regarding practice times and contest dates, contact George Xenakis at (408)

When? Saturday, March 4. 2000
Where? IBM Almaden Research Center
Who? This Conference is most appropriate for upper elementary, middle
school, and high school levels, but all teachers are welcome to attend.

Recent Workshop at Loral
1999 Essay Contest
Held each year to commemorate Apollo 11’s first manned landing on the
moon, this year’s contest addresses the theme: "As a Settler on the Moon
in the Year 2029, What Will the Moon Be Like?” (students are encouraged to
address type of settlements, job opportunities, recreation, etc.)

Essays of 10th Annual Essay Contest Banquet
Volunteers are needed each year to judge essays on originality and realism of
ideas presented, soundness of logic used to develop ideas, and quality of
composition and clarity of expression. Winners are honored at an Annual Awards
Banquet held in July where U.S. Savings Bonds, calculators, and AIAA seals flown
in space are among the prizes. Next year’s contest is scheduled to begin in
March of 1999.

1999 Galileo Memorial
Scholarship
Established as a collaborative effort between NASA Ames Research Center and
AIAA San Francisco, this annual Scholarship Program is held as a memorial to the
NASA men who perished on the Ames Galileo I aircraft on April 12, 1973. Open to high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in engineering,
mathematics, or physical or natural sciences, one $2,750 scholarship and
four $500 scholarships are awarded each year.
