The purpose of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is "to advance the arts, sciences, and technology of aeronautics and astronautics, and to promote the professionalism of those engaged in these pursuits."
Formed in 1963 through a merger of the American Rocket Society (ARS) and the Institute of Aeronautical Sciences (IAS), AIAA and its predecessors has been the principal society of the aerospace engineer and scientist. With over 30,000 members, AIAA is the world's largest professional society devoted to the progress of engineering and science in aviation, space, and defense. The Institute continues to be the principal voice, information resource, and publisher for aerospace engineers, scientists, managers, policymakers, students, and educators.
The AIAA membership is divided into over 60 sections, which provide local technical programs and activites of interest to aerospace professionals.
The AIAA San Francisco Section (AIAA SF) is composed of members in following northern California counties: Santa Clara, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin and Solano.
AIAA SF holds monthly dinner meetings on topics of general interest to aerospace professionals. The section newsletter is published bi-monthly in an abbreviated print form, and in a full content, full color on-line PDF form.
AIAA has several grades of membership, ranging from Student to Member to Fellow to Educator Associate. These are explained in the Member FAQ's.
