- Higher attendance at dinner programs
- worked on recruiting top speakers, and improving promotion.

- 4 abstracts received, paper deadline March 1, 1999.

- trying to recruit a leader for another forum. Not easy.

- Continued sending monthly postcards to "new members" and those "two months out"
- Continued to recognize new memberships and membership upgrades in each monthly newsletter

- Assisted with the local student paper contest.

Precollege Outreach Activities:
- Teacher Workshops: year-round
- November 7 Roche Bioscience, "The World of Color & Beyond" Educator Associates: Julie Shultz, Gail Chaid, and Cheryl Connolly assisted the Section Precollege Outreach Director. Completely funded by Roche: included breakfast, lunch, many freebies. 48 teachers attended.
- January 30, 1999 Space Systems/LORAL, "Satellite Technology" Joint AIAA/NASA/Space Systems/Loral PCO activity. To be partially funded by Loral (breakfast, lunch, hand-outs, etc.)
- March 6, 1999 NASA Ames Research Center, "Rainforests & Beyond". Bob Ballard’s Jason X (live telecasts)
- April 1999 McClellan AFB, "Flight through the Ages"
- Model Airplane Contests: year-round
Monthly airplane building sessions in Hangar One, Moffett Air
Field. Quarterly contests on time aloft and aesthetic design
- National Engineers Week: February 1999

- Companies are being solicited to coordinate efforts and provide volunteers to go into classrooms. Companies contacted include: Intel, IBM, Lockheed Martin, NASA Ames, HP.
- 1000 piece mailing to teachers in Santa Clara and
San Mateo counties

Training sessions will be held for engineers. AIAA Educator Associates will lead the grade level sessions.

- Goal: to put 400 engineers into 400 classrooms

- Discover E PCO Outreach at CalPoly, San Luis Obispo
- SF Section members will support the CalPoly, San Luis Obispo Student Engineering Council with their celebration of National Engineers’ Week.
- A mini-fair, "Flight through the Ages" will be coordinated by the SF Section PCO Director for 300 San Luis Obispo elementary school students. AIAA Distinguished Lecturer, Dr. Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute, will be the keynote speaker for the afternoon.
Annual Student Essay Contest: Spring 1999
Commemorates Apollo 11
7th & 8th graders submit 250 word essays addressing a lunar theme.
Technical Activities:
Education Activities:
- Local Student Paper Contest. 4 abstracts received.
- 2 winners get to present papers in Milan, Italy.
- promoted at all local aero/mech engineering departments.
Public Policy Activities:
- Preparation for 1999 Congressional Visits Day.
Other/Concerns:
- Officer nominations in progress, but very tough finding new leaders.
- Again, concern with employer support for Section leaders.
- New treasurer. Transition is complete. Now getting records up to date.
- Started partnership with the local aviation explorer post, we have some high hopes, but not sure how it going to work out.
