AGENDA:

1) Budget and other financial business: Budget on track.

AIAA Shortcourse account closed and moved into the operating account.

2) Nomination Committee status: No ballots received, ballots were put in the March/April newsletter. Vice-Chairman and Secretary positions still need nominees.

3) Dinner Programs: Dan Stuart sent out 250 renewal announcements and mentioned dinner programs in these announcements.

4) Newsletter: Need to change contact at HQ to Mike Etz. N/L posting need to be submitted to Mike by April 9. Mike needs the abstract/bios for the May/June speakers ASAP.

5) Student paper contests: Robert Bristol the winner. Pay only Robert’s airfare ($714). Special thanks to Daniela Cambie‘ for organizing this event! Get picture of Robert for N/L.

6) Honors and Awards:

The Galileo scholarship applications are being reviewed. We have had two meetings. We have the next meeting on 4/21. Only two nominations have been received todate for the Engineer of the Year.

I am sending remainders to all Directorates here at Ames. Would

you please ask the Council Lockheed-Martin members to announce on

their bulletin board. That is all I want to report to the

7) RAC / Section Awards: Steve Jaeger, Corky Lakin and Merlin Dorfman are the planned attendees for the May 22, 1999 RAC.

Do you like having the awards at Reno? Yes.

Is there a better venue? No.

What about the number of awards? Fewer categories

Would a reduced number of awards with more money increase the

prestige of the sectional awards? Yes

8) Public Policy: Big cutbacks in aeronautical research. Who is going to make a stand against this? Doubtful anyone will. The result could mean layoffs for NASA Ames this Fall.

9) Internet: Domain name and HQ hosting will be important topics for the future. Corky Lakin will attend next RAC to represent our web opinion. Corky is looking for volunteers to help maintain the web pages. The pages are in great shape for the Regional web contest.

10) Pre-College Report:

DISCOVER E

David Levinson, Discover E chairman, is distributing the last of the

200 teacher requests received. He expects to fill all requests by the end

of the school year.

David has requested committee member commitment for next year’s Discover E Program. I plan to ask Educator Associate Member, Christina Wilder, if she would like to take on this position. She is now a full-paying AIAA member and would like to take on some Council responsibilities.

PRECOLLEGE OUTREACH: CALPOLY, SLO

A Cat III rebate was approved by Ken Sanger to participate in a precollege outreach event at CalPoly, SLO as part of their National Engineers Week celebration.
According to Miles Nesman, the $500 check "is in the mail". It should be placed in the Precollege Outreach budget. (Thanks, Seth.)

TEACHERS WORKSHOP: Space Systems/Loral

51 people registered for the March 13 "Satellite Technology" workshop held at Space Systems/Loral.

Educator Associate members, Gail Chaid and Julie Shultz, presented hands-on curriculum activities.

Roger Martinez presented Analytical Graphics’ "Satellite Toolkit".

Solar scientist, Greg Slater of Lockheed Martin, presented on the solar satellites, YOHKOH and SOHO.

Executive VP, Cor Westerhoff, presented an overview of "Satellite Technology".

All participants "suited up" and were given an up-close and personal tour of the satellite high bays.

AIAA members, Tom Clausen and Norm Bergrun were in attendance.

Loral hosted breakfast, lunch, and afternoon refreshments for all attendees.

This was a very successful event. Thank you letters were sent to Bob

Berry and all Loral employees who participated. A request was made by Loral to acknowledge their involvement in Precollege Outreach by sending a letter to current AIAA President, Sam Iocabellis. This has been done. ***(Seth, I have checks for you to deposit. Although Loral hosted this event, we did charge a $10 materials fee. I also have reimbursements coming from this event. I will contact you to arrange a meeting time.)

ANNUAL ESSAY CONTEST

A 500 piece mailing for this year’s 7^th and 8^th grade essay contest was sent to bay area middle schools.
This year’s theme: "As a Settler on the Moon in the Year 2029, What Will the Moon Be Like?" (students are encouraged to address type of settlements, job opportunities, recreation, etc.)
Judges are needed to read the essays in early May. Volunteers????

FAMILY SCIENCE FAIR: PIEDMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL

This event is still a "go". It promises to be a very successful event. AIAA is being acknowledge for obtaining 14 scientists and engineers who will be presenting two, 50 minute hands-on sessions to groups of children (and parents) on April 15.
The tabletop display is in transit from the Western Region office for this event.

SPACE DAY

I am coordinating a Space Day event at my own elementary school for May 6, 2 - 6pm.
Chris McKay will be the guest speaker. Make-and-take activities are planned in any area of aero or astro. (Kites, paper airplanes, Apollo, shuttle,etc.)
Anyone interested in sharing their knowledge, let me know.

30^th ANNIVERSARY: Apollo 11 and Lunar Prospector

This event is still "in the works". Another planning meeting is scheduled.
A proposal is being written to be submitted to Michael Marlaire at Ames.
Space Systems/Loral is interested in lending their support.

PUBLIC POLICY

I attended CVD last month. A very enlightening experience. While

Norm was delegated to the White House meeting, I attended the NASA Headquarters meeting.

I was able to make six Congressional visits: Eshoo, Boxer, Feinstein, Lofgren, Rockefeller, and Monahan, as well as an impromptu visit to the Department of Education.
Norm did an exceptional job in representing the interests of those of you working at NASA Ames despite being told not to "rock the boat".
