*Judges have been secured for both the San Francisco and Santa Clara
County fairs.
*Gerald McKeegan volunteered to be lead judge for San Francisco. He
will be assisted by Jani Pallis.
*Kevin James "volunteered" to be lead judge for Santa Clara. He has
two people from Lockheed and one from Loral assisting him.
*Volunteers continue to call in this week due to Merlin's ad in the
Lockheed Star.
* 9th Annual Student Essay Contest
*Flyers are being sent to 700 schools in the bay area.
*To date, donations have been confirmed from Cislunar Aerospace ($200)
and Menlo Machine ($250).
*This year's theme: "Describe How the Wright Brothers' Invention of
Powered Flight Has Impacted Your Life"
*Teachers have been asked to assist us by "prescreening" and sending
the best of their classes' essays.
*Awards banquet is still scheduled for July. Former astronaut, Mike
Coats, has been invited to speak . . . but it's a long shot. Other
possibilities include: Warren Hall (NASA), Ed Daley (United), Chris
McKay (NASA), Seth Shostak (SETI).
*CONCERN: Judges are needed . . . any volunteers? Judging takes place
during the first two weeks in May.
Brian Haas volunteered to be a judge.
Public Policy: Glen Carl
Glen continued work on the "Airline Safety Initiative 1997". Glen prepared a budget and schedule and
presented it to the council. Glen also presented venue information for local hotels. Glen received help in
gathering the venue information from Barbara Maples of Jeppesen Dataplan. The details for the budget,
schedule and venue were discussed at a meeting following this council meeting. Glen plans to host the
event on June 9, 1997. No venue has been decided at this time.

Young Members: Matt Jardin
Matt reported 8 people attended the February DaVinci Forum. Matt enhanced the story about the AIAA
Robot Wars entry on the web pages. Matt suggested putting the Lockheed Martin logo on the home page.
Matt will pursue the possibility of adding the logo. Matt also asked if it was possible to get an Email alias
from AIAA National, such as matt_jardin@aiaa.org. Brian Haas will contact National to see if this is
feasible.

Glen is continuing to update the AIAA career web pages and that there is about 80 hits/day on the Jobs
Bulletin Board web page. Glen is still trying to recruit a new career enhancement director for the local
section. So far, still no response. Glen plans to participate in the National Career Enhancement Committee
teleconference this month. Glen reported that National now has a career placement service on its web site
at http://www.aiaa.org/employment/ .
Deputy Director at-Large: Norman Bergrun
Norm is working on plans for the "Congressional Visit Days" in Washington, DC on March 12, 1997.
Norm presented the schedule of this event, stated that he has been involved with several teleconferences,
gave briefing of potential questions, and stated the mission. The real mission is to impress on Congress that
fundamental research is needed for aerospace.
Norm attended the Public Policy Colloquium in Los Angeles on February 8, 1997. Norm plans to presented
our Section's public policy activities at this meeting, including the "Airline Safety Initiative" event. Norm
presented NASA's Dan Goldin's 3 pillars for aerospace, and they are (1) Global Civil Aviation, (2) Access
to Space, (3) Global Technology Leaps.
