Honors and Awards: Srini Srinivasan
Srini is working on the Honors & Awards banquet. Srini posted article in the newsletter which announced
membership service awards. Srini is looking for prior American Rocket Society members which may
qualify for membership awards. Brian requested that Srini send invitations for the Honors & Awards
banquet to the award recipients. Srini is working on the Galileo awards, and is currently working on a
selection process for the award. Srini requested funds to pay for the parents' dinners for the Galileo awards
dinner. Funds were approved. Srini wanted to know what to award for the Engineer of the Year award.
Srini was told to contact National and request a plaque. The Engineer of the Year award is not a financial
award. Srini requested help in distributing nomination entries for the Engineer of the Year award.
Membership: Tom Durrant (absent)
Newsletter: Kevin James
Kevin reported increased advertising for the Newsletter. Glen stated that Jeppesen is considering
advertising in the Newsletter. Kevin is still checking the post office box in Mountain View. Kevin provided
Glen with member address changes. Glen will mail these changes to National. Kevin reported on his
participation as Science Fair Judge. Kevin reported some coordination difficulties and would like to see
better guidelines for judging in the future. Kevin stated Newsletter deadline for May is April 10.
Web: Tsung-Chou Fang
Tsung-Chou reported that he was notified that the domain name for the web server would be changing. The
council requested that Tsung-Chou find out when and how much time will be allowed to transition to a
new domain name. The new domain name is also important to find out. Brian requested that Tsung-Chou
add a link to the dinner programs on the home page.
Programs: VACANT
Brian Haas is the contact for dinner programs.
Technical Activities: Peter Loewenhardt (absent)
The majority of Peter's activity last month was with regards to the dinner meeting and speaker Mike Day.
In addition he has been working a bit more on the "technical activities" web page - many, many thanks to
Tsung-Chou for correcting his hmtl mistakes. Hopefully this month we can try posting the first draft.
The major thing Peter wanted to relay was concerning a conference on low temperature plasmas in October
- the Gaseous Electronics Conference (this is its 50th year). He is on the executive council of the GEC and
they have organized a session on plasma based propulsion - Peter was hoping that we may be able to
advertise this fact through the AIAA (both locally through the SF section and also nationally) to gain
interest from the electric propulsion community. The emphasis is from the standpoint of plasma physics,
for example there are sessions on High Density Plasma semiconductor processing tools, Plasma Displays,
Plasma Lighting, Plasma Switching, etc... Peter thinks this would be a forum where the plasma physics of
plasma propulsion could be discussed in great detail and therefore would be a nice complement to other
conferences already dealing with electric propulsion. Please let Peter know your opinions.
Young Members: Matt Jardin (absent)
Matt is continuing to organize and host DaVinci forum events. Matt is organizing a special DaVinci forum
on April 8, 1997 at the Tied House, Mountain View, CA. This special forum will have Dr. Zubrin as a
guest, and will allow for book signing and social interaction with Dr. Zubrin.
Career Enhancement: VACANT
Glen Carl is the contact for Career Enhancement.
Deputy Director of Career Enhancement: Glen Carl
Glen is continuing to update the AIAA career web pages and that there is about 80 hits/day on the Jobs
Bulletin Board web page. Glen is still trying to recruit a new career enhancement director for the local
section. Glen participated in the National Career Enhancement Committee teleconference in March. Glen
reported that National re-linked the Section's career web pages on National career placement service web
site at http://www.aiaa.org/employment/ . The Section's career search web page was used as a basis for
search links by National. Glen reported that the Regional Deputy Directors of CE have been asked to
contact the Sectional Career Enhancement Directors for their activities and for information regarding a
career placement service which is beneficial to members in their region. Glen also reported that Jeppesen is
going pay his costs for the AIAA Leadership Conference in June.
Deputy Director at-Large: Norman Bergrun
Norm attended the "Congressional Visit Days" in Washington, DC on March 12, 1997. Norm reported the
event was a tremendous success. Attendance and participation were both good. Norm met some new
people. Norm stated this was the first time technical committees have gotten involved with Public Policy.
Norm suggested that we have volunteer sign-up lists at the Honors & Awards banquet and at other events,
and that this banquet was a good time to solicit dinner speakers. Some discussion was made and Brian Haas
concluded that he would present annual report and solicit for volunteers at the Honors & Awards banquet.
