This meeting was called to order by Brian Haas at 5:45 p.m.
Now have certificate of insurance. Brian submitted the certificate to the Secretary, Glen Carl.
There will be a tour of the Mountain View Space Camp in December. This should be a 2 hour tour. 45 people have already reserved. This reservation allows for 5 no shows.
Brian passed out information regarding preparation for the EIT Examination. This information was provided by the California Society of Professional Engineers, Santa Clara Valley Chapter. The first meeting is January 21, 1997 and the exam is April 19, 1997.
The December dinner program had to change dates. The December dinner program will now be on December 12, 1996.
Vice Chair: Juanita Ryan
Juanita is organizing a Space Camp tour at NASA Ames on Dec. 10, 1996, 6-7pm. This event will be open to members and their children. The tour will cost $5/person and will include time on the simulators. There is a 40 person limit. 45 are currently reserved.
Secretary: Glen Carl
Prepared last month's minutes and posted the minutes on the local web pages. Updated the council and advisory board roster for publishing in the Newsletter, on the web pages and for council use. The updated roster was also sent to Region VI Office. The inventory list has been postponed. Glen updated the local section's web statistics pages. The career jobs bulletin board web page was still receiving the most activity. Glen worked on getting Tsung-Chou Fang's web account established.
Treasurer: John Bosco
John distributed an updated '96-'97 budget. The budget was approved. John will continue to make updates to the budget. John said he would reserve a SVEC banquet table for $400, and take SVEC reservations for AIAA members. The SVEC Banquet is $40/person. John stated that we are still waiting for the Per Capita Rebate. John also completed badges for council members, and that the badges will be available for use at the December dinner program. Brian requested that John present a condensed version of the budget at future council meetings and that he keep a copy of the detailed budget.
Career: Glen Carl
Glen is continuing to update the AIAA career web pages and that there is about 50-60 hits/day on the Jobs Bulletin Board web page. Glen is still trying to recruit a new career enhancement director for the local section. So far, no response. Glen is not planning on attending the AIAA National Conference in Reno, Nevada in January, 1997. This is due to lack of funds. The conference is not relevant to the work performed by Glen's employer, so they will not be funding the trip, and the AIAA Western region is also not come forward to provide funds, and the trip is not with the local section's budget for regional activities.
Education / Pre-College: Juanita Ryan / George Crothall
George is helping the Santa Clara University students organized into an active AIAA student section. George is working on the Discover E program, activities include making Tech Museum reservations, getting materials organized and getting individuals committed to the Discover E program. Orientation for Discover E is January 22-23, 1997. The hardest part of getting volunteers is that adults find it difficult to talk to kids, and that it is difficult to get time off from work.
Juanita says that the upcoming Teacher Workshop has 62 teachers with confirmed reservations. Juanita is also preparing for the Teacher Workshop in Reno, Nevada in January, 1997. Juanita is looking for help for an essay contest theme for the upcoming essay contest. Brian Haas encouraged the pre-screening of essays by teachers before they are submitted to AIAA judges. Juanita is also looking for a technical advisor to help 5th grade girls build a robot.
Public Policy: Franz Busse (absent)
Honors and Awards: Srini Srinivasan
Srini is working on the upgrading of AIAA membership. Srini has had 6 senior, 6 associate and 2 fellow application requests. Srini ran out of associate forms, but will get replacements. Srini stated that the membership promotion may take awhile, but this depends on the upgrade level. The section may award the membership upgrade pins at the March dinner program. Srini is still accepting requests for membership upgrades. The Galileo Scholarship announcement was posted in the newsletter and he is already getting calls of inquiry.
Membership: Tom Durrant
Tom assisted in setting up the December dinner program for speaker Dr. James Wertz of Microcosm. Tom is working on a dinner programs display to promote new membership and involvement with AIAA activities.
Newsletter: Kevin James
Kevin posted the Lockheed Martin employment ad in the newsletter. Kevin stated that we should not expect bar codes anytime soon from AIAA National for newsletter distribution. Kevin says that the new AIAA accounting program at National has made bar codes a low priority. The lack of bar codes is costing our section $250 per month. Kevin will keep trying to get bar codes. Kevin purchased the Adobe Framemaker software to develop the newsletter on. Kevin is finding this software very helpful for the development of the newsletter.
Web: Tsung-Chou Fang (absent)
Tsung-Chou now has a Juggler account, and can now directly maintain the AIAA web pages. Tsung-Chou encourages the council to submit him web pages, and states that he even will help council members design their web pages if needed.
Dinner Programs: VACANT
Brian Haas is the contact for dinner programs.
