This meeting was called to order by Brian Haas at 1:00pm.

I. Minutes of July Meeting

Minutes were distributed and approved as written.

II. Annual Report

The draft version of the San Francisco Section Annual Report for program year 1995-1996 was distributed. Corrections and additions to the annual report must be submitted to Brian Smith before the September 4, 1996 council meeting. It was suggested as an idea that the annual report be posted on the web. Further action on posting on the web will be proposed at the next council meeting.

III. Introductions

Board members started the meeting by introducing themselves, and enjoying refreshments at the Santa Clara Marriott sponsored by the AIAA San Francisco Section.

V. Reason for the meeting

Brian Haas presented the following reasons why we are meeting like this:
kick off organization; goals - statement written; roles of each member; brainstorm - possible / crazy options; complete an annual schedule; approved budget; action items; concerns; impressions.

VI. Ground Rules

Brain Haas established the following ground rules:
one at time speaking; Brian - refresh.; on schedule; no disruptive side discussions; get to point; don't critical during brainstorming ideas; respect all opinions.

V. Section Goals for 1996-1997

The following goals were brainstormed:
#1 Section of the Year Award; 10 Edison Network projects; increase dinner meeting attendance; improve AIAA image, technically attractive, technical committees; service students (Ed.); DaVinci Forum regular event; National awards; education community outreach (Ed.); network with other professional societies; create aerospace constituency; university outreach (Ed.); enhance web pages and establish as a top 10% web page for aerospace (PP); diverse members / events; tie in public policy / public relations; improve electronic communication; interact with other Region VI sections (electronic); reach distant members; serve customers (members); develop ourselves; foster future leadership; expand committees.

The following goals were picked as the top 5:

VI. Council Roles and Director Responsibilities

The following council roles for all directors:
team member; treat customers right; informed about us; attendance at all council events for section; come prepared; recruit your replacement / alternates; contact Region director.

Chair: Brian Haas
leader; knows how organization works; knows responsibilities of all directors; spokes person for section; sets / monitors goals / events; delegates.

Vice Chair: Juanita Ryan
supports chair; learns chair responsibilities; alternate for chair; member of audit committee.

Secretary: Glen Carl
minutes; keep all records; knows where all Section property is located; maintains council roster; maintains stationary supply.

Treasurer: John Bosco
maintains Section finances; complies with tax laws and other financial regulations.

Career: Glen Carl
knows member profile; provides career enhancement opportunities; maintains Section career web pages.

Education / Pre-College: Juanita Ryan
promotes aerospace literacy; provides aerospace incentives / interest; promotes teacher enhancement; public relations to pre-college.

Public Policy: Franz Busse
facilitate communication for members, government and community; monitors aerospace issues; maintains public policy pages on the Section web pages; encourages debates / interaction; provides training on how to communicate with government and community.

Honors and Awards: Srini Srinivasan
manages Galileo Scholarship; member awards; member pins; member grades; National member awards; council awards; maintains Section award web pages.

Membership: Tom Durrant
maintains membership list for Section; membership issues (changes, etc.); recruiting.

Newsletter: Kevin James
publish newsletter; solicit input / stories; clarify deadlines / formats; work with event chairs; advertising; maintain Section newsletter web pages.

Web: Tsung-Chou Fang
solicit content (not generate); maintain web site / sponsorship.

Dinner Meeting: Gary Cohen
speaker and details / logistics for dinner meetings; provide information of dinner meetings to newsletter and web site; reservation and payment (registration).

Technical Activities: Matt Jardin
Edison Network; special events; technology tracking / training; maintain technology expert list in conjunction with public policy; promote technical events and new technology via email and newsletter.

Young Members: Matt Jardin & Franz Busse
university outreach; recruiting / follow-up of young members; make AIAA relevant / fun for young members; interact with Human Resource departments of aerospace companies; involve and recognize young members; tie to rest of AIAA; public policy / public relations on web; sponsor membership opportunities.

VII. Brainstorming

The following ideas were suggested at the meeting, included with some of the ideas are names or directorships which will take action on these ideas:
post annual report on web (web); contribute to AIAA leadership briefing (John Bosco); tours / site visits; network with other professional societies; wide / extensive / focused marketing; inform our bosses of our council work; define directors roles for members via web pages (100 words of what roles are); Questions and Answers section in Newsletter and on Web; projector / camera equipment, sponsor; public policy training; review award criteria, etc.; membership forms available at events and HR departments; consultants list; charges for missed events; National technology / reference list; email service to provide launch to web point; AIAA local networks available across country; presence in Aerospace America (Franz Busse); more photos; Edison Network Award ($) and presentation (Matt Jardin); invite guest teacher to dinner meeting (Juanita Ryan); BBQ / outdoor activities (Matt Jardin); informal activity in Santa Cruz (Glen Carl); free pizza dinner to recruit; name tags (John Bosco); free pitcher at DaVinci Forum; joint meetings (potential joint meeting with Human Resource Society); education column for newsletter; chair column in newsletter; dinner meeting review in newsletter; Girl's education event (dinner meeting or separate); Comet public event (Juanita Ryan); Nightclub event (John Bosco, Matt Jardin); invite controversy (Mar's life, FAA, Airline Safety, Rocket Co.) X. Wrap Up

Brian Haas concluded the meeting by asking board members to follow-up on their action items, and prepare budgets for their events. Due to time constraints, the budget was not approved. The budget is planned to be approved at the next council meeting. Further discussion of the Edison Network is also planned at the next council meeting.

The meeting was adjourned by Brian Haas at 5:30pm.

XI. Dinner

The Section council and significant others attended a dinner at Allie's American Grill, Santa Clara Marriott. The dinner was sponsored by the AIAA San Francisco Section as a form of appreciation of the volunteer effort of board members.
