AIAA September Council Meeting

1. Introductory comments

a) upcoming events

* FFMF (push it to first Friday in October)
* September Dinner Meeting (Bryson Award)
* Congressional Debate
* have to pay for Stanford facilities
* Anthony Logan (pres. of SJ State) said we can use space at SJS. He's checking for dates in first week of Oct.
* Almost done coming up with a list of candidates
* Focus as a sci/tech debate, not a full-topic debate
* Possibly use SJ State's publicity department --go through student chapter for publicity
* Need people! (contacting candidates, etc)
* John VanArsdall will help on committee
* Develop a concise list of questions for the
debate (e.g. what is role of NASA, how to fix ATM, etc.)
* Norm suggests talking to Paul Looney for list of questions that are being posed to Presidential Candidates
* Email to Morgan's AOL address instead of Lockheed address
* February History of Aviation Event

b) concerns

* October dinner meeting!
* Cecilia Aragon -- competitive aerobatic pilot --try for Oct.
* Possibility for Barry Scott
* Need confirmation by next Friday (15th)
* New officers
* (Dan Stuart) knows of an instructor or professor at SJSU. Name is Dr. Barez ==> Matt is to contact him
* Astronomical Viewing Event (any volunteers?)
* John V. has been looking into this.

2. Council Reports

a) Newsletter & Public Policy

* Everyone should look for errors/omissions in newsletter
* Norm: made a presentation at the RSAC meeting. Brief committee on the report to increase section-level participation in public policy.Comments: they didn't want term *advocacy*, New York section is inactive, Arrowhead is inactive.

* Norm handed out a webpage copy that came from AeroWebSpace LLC, formed by members of LA and Orange County sections to connect Aerospace buyers/suppliers. AIAA will probably not look kindly on this.

b) Treasurer

* Handed out Seth's report
* Discussed the CD-account pull-out to cover newsletter costs

c) Secretary

d) Vice-chair

* Gano needs to find a replacement for the tech. programs.
* Sometime in October there'll be another tech. program (possibly a trip to Oakland Center)
* Possibly Steve Atkins for Tech programs

e) Young Professionals

* get email list over to John
* get an account for John on our website
* Greg Rogers (SJState) interested in helping out
* Considering ski trip (possibly coincide with Reno meeting)

f) Membership

* Don't have Sept. data yet
* For August, an increase of about 15-17 new members

g) Evolution of Flight

h) Precollege

* Juanita looking for topic suggestions
* Norm wants something that really requires creativity instead of parroting what they've been taught

i) Honors and Awards

* Matt will be forwarding eng. of the year nominations to national

j) Technical Activities

* See above (Vice-chair)

k) Programs

* Matt & Fanny will work on updating the October page so that Fanny can take over that task.

l) AIAA On-line

* who is taking over dinner meeting page updates (Fanny and Matt)

m) Sister Section

* Work with Larry Chien
