January 4, 2000 Council meeting minutes:

An amazing 14 people attended the meeting: Steve, Mike, Juanita, Gano,
Roger, Matt, Seth, Rick, Norm, Corky, Morgan, Howard, and Dan.
Morgan brought John van Arsdahl.

-reviewed action times. Approved minutes from previous meeting.

-Steve summarized important stuff that needs to be acknowledged during meeting:


Committee Reports:

-Public Policy (Norm Bergrun)
Discussed dismal future of aeronautics in light of high speed research funding cut. Discussed issues for potential public forum: new runways at SFO, increase in air traffic etc. CVD problem: Congress may be on recess at that time, will go anyway. Council voted to send Morgan Bracken.

-Young Professionals (Matt Jardin)
Another fermented fluids held on Jan 7th ...billiards. Howard put link on Stanford web site. March reception planned with Fellows and Young professional members.

-Newsletter (Mike Etz)
Editor duties handed over to Morgan Bracken. Steve is collecting items for the next issue. Don't forget mention of Merlin Dorfman's software award. Election ballot in next issue.



-Technical (Gano Chatterji)
Flight planning forum, Jan 26th 2000
(ACTION ITEM: send message over NASA e-mail. Gano, Steve)

Planning forum on patents for March (could count as career forum, as well.)



-On-line (Corky)
Corky back. Attempt to put newsletter on-line.
(ACTION ITEM: meet with NL people to discuss on-line NL. Rick, Corky.)



-Finance (Seth)
Income below expected. $4000 in savings. Two outstanding checks - one to Srini for awards, one for Pioneer's Forum.(ACTION ITEM: take care of checks. Seth)


-Dinner programs (Roger)
Kickass December meeting. Possible Van pool for Oakland meeting to take back SJ train riders. Suggest BART in Fremont as possible transportation.

(ACTION ITEM: Contact Berkeley, Davis etc. to get attendees.)
(ACTION ITEM: Go up to Oakland to see restaurant. Steve or Matt)

Want to have Industrial Light and magic for one of the kid meetings.

Galileo Scholarship nomination form went out. Srini nominated for Special Service award.

-Membership (Dan)
1450 members in SF section, largest in region 6. Still sending out reminder cards.



-Evolution of Flight (Steve)
Rus Robinson article in Jan/Feb issue. Ray Kelly article planned for Mar/Apr issue. Still working on web page. Want to put audio/pics on web site.


-Pre-college outreach (Juanita)
Juanita is back. David Levinson and Discover E cranking along. Engineer orientations scheduled for L-M and IBM. can register on shawworks.com
mars Day held in December.

March 4th workshop planned for Science and Technology Conference 2000. Guest: astronaut Steve Smith.

March workshops planned for McClellen AFB and Roche Pharmaceuticals. April science night...need speakers. Space Day event planned for Tech museum....NEED ENGINEERS

Essay Contest funding $1000? Cat III ?

(ACTION ITEM: invite Sacramento 2003 ambassador to a dinner meeting. Steve.)

Received e-mail from Davis students. Want speakers. Suggesting Owen Brown, Seth Shostak, Chris McKay. Stranger things have happened.

AIAA strong at SJSU, Stanford and Davis.

BRIEFLY Discussed EUROAVIA visit. Mat wrote summary of meeting goals. Council voted to pay cost of dinner for EUROAVIA delegates.

-Jan 22 RAC meeting (Steve)

Who is going to RAC meeting? Most likely Steve's last meeting. Norm Bergrun is running for Region VI director.
