The Galileo Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the NASA crew who perished aboard NASA 711, a highly modified CV-990 Research Jet in April 1973. The scholarship is awarded to a High School Student who is selected based upon the merits of an application and Essay submitted to an announced Galileo Memorial Scholarship offering made by the NASA Ames Research Center. More than one scholarship may be awarded for each announcement.
The name of this Scholarship shall be the “NASA Ames Research Center & American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics — San Francisco Section Galileo Memorial Scholarship.”
This policy may be amended by a quorum of the AIAA-SF Council at a Council Meeting.
Manage the Galileo Memorial Scholarship funds in an AIAA-SF account in a financial institution of its choosing. The funds shall not be co-mingled with other AIAA or AIAA-SF accounts.
Ensure funds for each announcement of a Galileo Memorial Scholarship are available consistent with the number and amounts of awards for that announcement before the announcement is made. The AIAA-SF will attempt to maintain and/or manage the funds so that the scholarships can be conducted in perpetuity. The AIAA will seek donations, contributions, and/or financial management aid towards this goal.
In consultation with others before each announcement of a Galileo Memorial Scholarship, determine the scoring system, applicant requirements other than stated herein, number of scholarships, and the amounts of the scholarships to be awarded for each announcement. The scoring system used to evaluate applicants shall be independent of race, religion, creed, sex, or national origin and shall not change during the period of scoring for all of the applications for each announcement.
Is the principal manager of the Evaluation Team composed of the Honors and Awards Chairperson and Evaluating Officials, and
Selects the Evaluating Officials who score the Applicants for a Galileo Memorial Scholarship, and
Compiles the results of the evaluating official's scores of the applicants for that announcement and determines the Awardee, and
Notifies the Council and others of the selection of the Awardees.
An Evaluating Official:
Is a member of an Evaluation Team selected by the AIAA-SF Honors and Awards Chairperson and
Shall be a currently registered member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in the San Francisco Section, a badged NASA Ames Research Center Civil Service employee, or a badged on-site contractor employee serving under a current contract to the NASA Ames Research Center and
Evaluates an application by the use of a Council approved scoring system and
Facilitates communication between NASA and AIAA towards the goal of selecting an Awardee for the announcement and
Disqualify himself or herself as an evaluating official for that applicant in the event that the applicant is closely related to the evaluating official or where a conflict of interest may exist between an applicant and the evaluating official and
Is not financially or otherwise monetarily compensated
Applicants for a Galileo Memorial Scholarship shall
Be a United States citizen and
Be a high school student in either Grade 11 or 12 and
Reside in and attend a public high school in one of the following eight Bay Area Counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Solano.
Submit a complete application and Essay in satisfaction of the requirements of an announcement of a Galileo Memorial Scholarship and
Otherwise satisfy the requirements for that announcement
An applicant who has satisfied the above requirements for an applicant and is selected for a Galileo Memorial Scholarship by the Evaluation Team shall be an “Awardee.”
An Awardee shall be selected based on the best score for that announcement consistent with the following: If applicable, at least one applicant, who is a dependent of a NASA Ames Civil Servant or Ames on-site contractor employee and satisfies the above requirements, shall be selected as an Awardee.
An Awardee shall be notified following his/her selection.
The time and place of the award of the scholarship shall be determined by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics – San Francisco Section and shall be made known to the Awardee after it is determined.
Historically the presentation of the award has been made at an AIAA-SF dinner meeting in April following the announcement with a representative of the NASA Ames Research Center senior management presenting the award.
An Awardee shall be made aware that he/she may be photographed and that their image may be used in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) newsletter, Internet web site (aiaa-sf.org), or other published or printed material as determined by the AIAA. All essays submitted and images taken are the property of the AIAA-SF and may be used by the AIAA-SF in the promotion of the AIAA-SF and the AIAA.
In the event that this Council terminates or this Scholarship is terminated by the AIAA-SF Council, then
This policy shall terminate and
The AIAA-SF Council shall notify the NASA Ames Research Center Exchange (Ames Exchange), or its successor, of the termination and
Any remaining funds in the Galileo Memorial Scholarship account shall, by decision of a quorum of the Council, be distributed
In accordance with an AIAA-SF Council decision or
To the NASA Ames Research Center Ames Exchange Council, or its successor, or to a financial institution of its choice.

A Complete application submitted by an Applicant must be submitted by the deadline date in the announcement and include the following
A complete application form
An essay, limited to 1200 words, that describes the career that the applicant intends to pursue and the proposed course of study. The motivation for the choice, any special interests, and expected accomplishments should be stated.
Scholastic records in the form of an official high school transcript along with SAT or other college entrance test scores.
A listing of achievements, honors, and awards in academic, extracurricular (e.g., sports, music, school clubs), and community service activities.
A letter of recommendation from a faculty member who has personal knowledge of the applicant's abilities.
The Evaluation Team determines the winners of the Scholarship on the basis of the following factors. Evaluation of:
An essay, limited to 1200 words, that describes the career that the applicant intends to pursue and the proposed course of study. The motivation for the choice, any special interests, and expected accomplishments should be stated.
Scholastic records in the form of an official high school transcript along with SAT or other college entrance test scores.
A listing of achievements, honors, and awards in academic, extracurricular (e.g., sports, music, school clubs), and community service activities.
A letter of recommendation from a faculty member who has personal knowledge of the applicant's abilities.
An interview of finalists at the NASA Ames Research Center.
