Anecdotal Information and Project Background

Tinnitus is a persistent ringing in ones head when there's no external noise. Research indicates that about 36 million Americans have occasional or constant tinnitus. About 10 million have such severe symptons that they have sought medical help. The rest experience a low level of noise - usually in both ears, sometimes in just one. The physiological or nuerological cause of such subjective sounds isn't always known, but they are a symptom of something that has gone awry in the auditory system. There is no standard drug or medical procedure to relieve tinnitus. There are nonmedical ways of relieving tinnitus that have proven effective. The most effective method is to drown out the sounds of tinnitus with less bothersome sounds.

Project Description

The purpose of the Tinnitus Project is to perform research and develop an electronic device based on the principal of noise cancellation to counteract the effects of tinnitus. Successful development will result in a marketable product for the treatment of tinnitus.
