Dr. George Bibel
The University of North Dakota

Dr. George Bibel teaches traditional engineering courses and several innovative new courses featuring engineering disasters. This talk will focus on a variety of unusual airplane crash accidents and related engineering science. Dr. Bibel will detail how crash investigators use physics, aerodynamics, and mechanical engineering to determine the probable cause of a crash and how resulting safety recommendations are incorporated to make flying safer.

Dr. George Bibel is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at The University of North Dakota. He began his engineering career with the Standard Oil Co. and has extensive experience with all phases of petrochemical equipment. He also has worked extensively with NASA Lewis doing research on rotocraft transmission gearing. His presentation to the San Francisco Section combines his research interests in failure analysis and aircraft. Dr. Bibel has been a speaker at FAA safety seminars and is the author of the book Beyond the Black Box: The Forensics of Airplane Crashes. Dr. Bibel received a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University (1987) and an MS from University of Michigan (1980).
