Candidate for AIAA Director Region VI 

Summary of Goals

Help members obtain increased benefits from dues; represent members' interests diligently; and help further Institute goals, objectives and technological capability.

  Statement of Goals

As Director of Region 6, I will strive to make AIAA member benefits significantly more valuable. Envisioned are a sensitive response to member needs and, new professionally rewarding cutting-edge opportunities occasioned by the web. Also envisioned are organizational initiatives to effectuate technology requirements in Aviation, Defense and Space which, in turn, should translate into a stable aerospace workforce. As Director, I will use the RAC meetings, the Annual Public Policy Colloquium and individual inputs as representing the guiding will of the region membership. At the next higher level, the RSAC meetings, I will weave the needs of Region 6 harmoniously in with the needs of the other regions; and lastly, on the Board of Directors I will, to the best of my ability, represent Region 6 members regarding corporate AIAA matters 

Biography

ScD (Hon) World University 1983; LLB LaSalle University Ext. 1955; BSME Cornell University 1943; Aeronautics courses, Stanford University 1948. Registered California Professional Engineer. Founded Bergrun Engineering and Research, 1971 and its web identity, Bergrun Research, 1999; Director, Information Systems, Nielsen Engineering and Research, 1969-71; Manager, Flight Test Plans and Analysis, Navy Polaris Underwater Launch Missile System and Senior Scientist, Special Space-Satellite Applications, Lockheed Missile & Space Company, 1956-1969. Research Scientist, Ames Research Laboratory, NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) predecessor of Ames Research Center, NASA where he pioneered the methodology of airplane thermal ice-prevention design and developed roll-stability laws for airplanes, missiles and rockets, 1944-56; Design Engineer, heating and ventilating systems, Douglas Aircraft Company, 1943-44. 

AIAA Activities: Associate Fellow. Member since 1946. Deputy Director-at-Large Region 6, 1994-; Chair, National Public Policy Communication Subcommittee, 1994-; Coordinator, National Public Policy Task Force, 1999. Congressional Visits Day Leader, 1997, -98, -99. Deputy Director Public Policy Region 6, 1989-94; Director Public Policy, San Francisco Section, 1986-89. Senior judge, 7th and 8th grade essay contests, 1992-; Moderator, International Space Station Public Forum 1998; Advisor, San Francisco Airline Safety Initiative, 1997. Chair, San Francisco IAS/AIAA Section 1962-63. Co-chairman, National IAS Conference "Ushering in Commercial Jet Airplanes", 1958. 

Honors and Awards: AIAA Special Service Citations, 1992, -94, -97 -98; California Society of Professional Engineers (CSPE): President, 1988-89; Leadership and Integrity Award, 1989; Archimedes Engineering Achievement Award, 1988; Outstanding Executive Performance, 1986; Distinguished contributions, 1985, -86, -87. Author of about 100 papers; two books, Tomorrow's Technology Today, 1971 and Ringmakers of Saturn, 1986 . Listed in Marquis "Who's Who in the World", "Who's Who in Science and Engineering" and other reference works.
